Youngsters can help upgrade the ICU at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s hospital in Cape Town

12 January 2016

Children can help make a difference to the lives of other children. The Sea Harvest Kids for Kids initiative, which runs annually from November to February, is now into its sixth year. A portion of the sales of selected Sea Harvest crumbed fish products* are donated to The Children’s Hospital Trust. To date R1.3 million has been donated by Sea Harvest to the Trust for a variety of projects at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town.

This year the Sea Harvest Kids for Kids initiative will help upgrade and expand the hospital’s paediatric intensive care unit (ICU), which is the largest ICU for children in Africa. Currently it has 22 beds for critically ill or injured children who come for specialised care and emergency surgeries from local areas and other African countries. The demands on this unit are higher than their capacity to deliver.

The Children’s Hospital Trust CEO, Louise Driver said, "There is a dire need to expand the ICU to accommodate up to 39 beds, which includes a 10-bed High Care Unit for neonatal patients and the establishment of eight isolation cubicles. It is not only the increased amount of beds that is essential, but also the provision of more space around beds to comfortably accommodate critical life-saving equipment. Thanks to donors like Sea Harvest we are able to fund important projects like this that ultimately help save children’s lives."

Sea Harvest is South Africa’s leading black-empowered commercial fishing company that provides local, sustainably caught Cape Hake. Since 2010 Sea Harvest’s Kids for Kids Initiative has donated funds to the Trust for various projects at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital, including a Surgical Skills Training Centre, a General Medical Ward, a new Medical Imaging Complex, and a Childsafe Research and Educational Centre.

Sea Harvest Sales and Marketing Director, Konrad Geldenhuys, says, "We are delighted to be working with The Children’s Hospital Trust, and are looking forward to helping them raise money for the much needed expansion of their ICU. So far we are well on our way to reach this year’s target of R300 000 to make this a reality."

Sea Harvest donates a portion of sales of every box of selected coated Sea Harvest products* to The Children’s Hospital Trust. Ensure that your little ones are eating healthily and, at the same time, contribute to making a difference in the lives of young patients at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s hospital.
